The Liberal Democrat peer, Lord Eric Avebury, received the Ahmadiyya Muslim Peace Prize for the Advancement of Peace. The historical peace prize was awarded for his lifetime efforts for the advancement of the cause of Human Rights.

Islam focuses on securing peace in every sphere of human activity. It encourages all to promote education, respect and tolerance, improve social and interfaith harmony, support charitable causes and serve humanity regardless of race, creed or colour. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is dedicated to establish peace at all levels and to protect the basic human rights of all. In light of this it is keen to recognise efforts made by anyone to advance the cause of peace. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Peace Prize is therefore awarded in recognition of an individual’s or an organisation’s contribution for the advancement of the cause of peace.

The conference was attended by MPs, diplomatic representatives, councillors, other civic and professional leaders and 100's of other guests. Mr Rafiq Hayat, president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community UK, had said earlier that delegates at the conference will be told that peace is integral to the practice of Islam.
“It is not sufficient simply to proclaim that Islam is a religion of peace..”
“It is beholden on every Muslim to be the living embodiment of this golden Islamic principle – and to demonstrate it in their daily life.”

“Our peace conferences are held across the country and bring together people of all faiths and of no faith with the common aim of promoting peace.
“We stand opposed to extremism in all its ugly forms and our efforts to champion the cause of peace reflect the true Islamic teachings and values.”

His Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (atba) has repeatedly said:
“A true Muslim can never raise his voice in hatred against his fellow citizens, nor for that matter against the ruling authority or government of the time."
His Holiness, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (atba), the spiritual head of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community delivered the keynote address at Annual Peace Symposium at Baitul Futuh last night on the 20th March, 2010.
Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (atba) spoke about the need for peace, futility of the UN, Hijab and Minaret issues; and much more in his powerful and thoughtful address.
